On my way to the Basilique du Sacré Cœur that I had not visited in decades, and being lunch time, I was on the lookout for a place to eat in an area I am not familiar with. Asking around, I was told that Rue des Martyrs should float my boat... And it did when I came across this unassuming façade and apparently mundane menu....
At 17 euros for a two-course lunch + vino, I was not going to break the bank, even if the place was not up to my expectations... But then, you come in and you are graciously welcomed by Martial Guillet, the owner, who will take an inordinate of time and passion to tell you all about the history of rue des Martyrs and how he sources the most local and fresh ingredients to make everything on the premises with the help of talented Chef Gaëtan Berthelot. The restaurant has been around since 2011, another reason to be trusted.
When I tell you that the duck terrine is home made, you will probably think that this not particularly unusual in Paris, but when you find out the quenelle de brochet is made from scratch for each client in the kitchen, then you will be stunned... And what a quenelle it was! Don't even think of eating cheese or crème caramel after that, even if Martial as a good salesperson will try to persuade you... Sorry mate, that was so good, you don't need anything else afterwards other than a good coffee and a walk up the hill to the Basilique!
Not only the meal, the wine and the decor were outstanding for such a small and understated restaurant, but the entertainment, knowledge and impeccable service provided by Martial would make the trip to La Table des Anges worthwhile just to get a sandwich and a café. Plus you won't break the bank, the Right Bank that is...
