Périgord truffles have a great reputation of flavour and are very pricey as they are mainly found in the wild, and are so called black truffles. There are more truffles in the Drôme - around Valence and Montelimar, as well as in the Luberon, near Apt where they are mainly cultivated. White truffles are found in Northern Italy and Croatia, where the biggest ruffle on record has been found in 1999 at 1.31 kg and a 1.3kg black truffle found in the south of France and sold in 2012. So, Ted and Barbara Smith from Yelverton Truffles in Robertson in the Southern Highlands of NSW can be proud of their achievement - finding a 1.172 kg truffle on their property in July this year. It was subsequently sold to the restaurant of Centennial Wines nearby in Bowral for 2500$. It was so big that Ted didn't need the help of his truffle dog, Jet, a very well behaved animal who knows it is time to work when on a leash.
James Viles of Biota Dining fame took us and his Executive Chef Joel on a trip to Yelverton Truffles a few week-ends ago and we met Barbara, Ted and Jet and were treated to a grand tour and degustation. You will find a few photos of our escapade below.

We have revamped our "Restaurants Reviews" page to help with Search Engine Optimisation and harmonising the look of these pages with the rest of the site. We have also removed temporarily reviews of restaurants that have recently closed like Tastevin but kept the one for Guillaume at Bennelong which is now reopened in Paddington as Guillaume, which we have not had a chance to try yet. Each review has its own page, so it is easier for you and Google to find them.
We currently have only three reviews:
Biota Dining - Bowral - Southern Highlands of New South Wales
Guillaume at Bennelong
You will find mention of other restaurants we have had the privilege to dine at over the course of my gastronome life. You can use our "Search" function to find a short description of our culinary encounters. Over time, we will endeavour to blow up these snippets to a full blown review.
Your feedback will be most appreciated
