Our French Impressions:  a taste of France, virtually...

Food - Fuel for Life

Whatever you intend to do with your day, you will need energy and food is obviously the way to acquire it.
The better the food and the rituals surrounding it, the more energy you will derive from it.
French people are famous for their long lunches and you will find here ingredients for creating your own meals, where to source them from (
markets and shops), and how to transform them into a delicious treat (recipes).
If you are not in the mood of cooking yourself, then maybe you would like to wander to a nearby
restaurant...
We will also explore the traditional companions of food in the way of
mineral water and wine, two very famous staples of the French terroir

The markets

Picture
Markets in France are still a major part of life both in the cities and in the villages and are a major supplier of fresh food and household items. Shopping for food at markets across the country will give you a very deep understanding of the food culture and the variety of produce available in each region, as well as reconnect you with seasonal cooking, a thing that has been mostly lost due to globalisation: you will not find melons on a Provencal market in December!

The specialised shops

Picture
Besides the world famous Fauchon and Hediart delicatessen, France has hundreds of specialised shops, often selling a handful of products and famous miles around their region and beyond.

Bertillon for sorbets, Izrael for spices, Nicolas for wine and Androuet for cheese are certainly known well beyond Paris.

More on these shops in coming weeks...
